Van Riemsdyk signed with the Chicago Blackhawks on March 24, 2014 as a free agent after three years at the University of New Hampshire.

He made his NHL debut with the Blackhawks on Oct. 9, 2014 and played four playoff games for them that season, helping Chicago win the Stanley Cup.
​
Van Riemsdyk played two more seasons for the Blackhawks and scored an NHL career high five goals in 2016-17. He was claimed by the Vegas Golden Knights in the NHL Expansion Draft on June 21, 2017 but was traded the following day to the Hurricanes, along with a seventh-round at the 2018 NHL Draft, for a second-round selection in 2017.

Van Riemsdyk is the younger brother of Flyers forward James van Riemsdyk.
